Black tie at the movies

by

My best friend Kara, a news anchor for the NBC affiliate in Portland, was invited to a black tie grand opening of a new movie theatre in town. She asked me to go with her, and boy, it was- uh- interesting. We were greeted by two local semi-celebs on a red carpet, asking guests about their outfits and their dates (a la Joan Rivers). Those interviews were being videotaped and broadcast live on a screen in the theatre's lobby with flashy graphics and music. Inside, there were mime Oscar statues, movie-themed martinis, a roaming magician, an elaborate ice sculpture, food aplenty and the usual grand opening stuff- speeches, champagne, balloons and tours of the facility. We left with an engraved champagne glass as well as some movie popcorn in a goodie bag, tied w/ film strip (we were secretly hoping for movie passes). And altho it was a bit over-the-top, the vendors did a great job pulling the event together.
