contesting contests

I have a serious dislike for photography contests.

I cringe knowing that so many of my colleagues crave being recognized by their peers- in addition to the fact that it takes away time from business and money to enter.

Each quarter, however, my membership with the Wedding Photojournalist Association (WPJA) includes two free entries into their wedding photography contests (which determines how high a ranking you have on their lists by state). And each quarter, I enter two images and refuse to purchase additional credits.

Turns out, I placed with one of those freebie entries in the most recent contest in the Toasts category for a funny moment at Lisa and Ehren's wedding last spring (and I have placed twice before as well).

Darn. Perhaps I should enter more images?

I'm torn.

Congrats!!! This is the only contest I enter and it is such shameful self promotion...but it is fun to see your name in lights sometimes ;)

Nice photo, and nice to have won?

My opinion? Your photography business does not seem to be suffering from your lack of entries into these contests. And entering a bunch and placing sometimes probably wouldn't greatly advance your career, right? So unless you really love the thrill of the win and want to pursue it for that reason, I probably wouldn't bother.

Please feel free to disregard my advice. :)

  3. I hear ya here! I am kind of the same way. But then I go to use the free two credits and I can not narrow it down to just two so I enter 10!

I think you should enter more for sure. Your stuff rocks!

  4. When I saw your name, I squealed for joy!! Does that make you want to enter more pictures? ;)

I'm with Tyler - I can't possibly choose... but I always feel like I have to enter something with those credits... what can I say... I'm a sucker.... but a happy sucker.
