What do you get when you mix a bride with an extended family from Lebanon, a groom with Irish heritage, and a fantastic bluegrass band? Maya and Sean’s amazing, eclectic wedding!
I distinctly remember a moment during their reception, in the barn, when I was surrounded by people dancing with such energy that I could feel the floorboards literally bouncing under my feet! The band members of The Tricky Britches were playing their hearts out and the guests were clearly enjoying it. Later on, when they took a break, recorded Lebanese music filled the space and just as many people got down to that! Let’s just say both Maya and Sean ended up being lifted in chairs over everyone’s heads with rather surprised looks on their faces.
I really appreciated how they managed to combine such seemingly disparate elements into one big, fun experience for everyone who got to be a part of it, including me. I think it speaks to how open these two are, and also to how two people falling in love can bring individuals together who likely would never have even met. And not only were their families brought together, they embraced each other with open arms and celebrated Maya and Sean’s obvious love for each other.
How they met, in their own words:
We decided to marry in Maine, as it holds a special place in both of our hearts. Sean grew up in Orono, and Maya attended college at Bowdoin in Brunswick. We actually met while living in Washington, DC, in 2008 on Match.com. We knew instantly that there was a spark!
Maine once again became our home again in 2010 and we have since enjoyed many adventures skiing, hiking, biking and climbing together. Last August, Sean proposed to Maya on the top of Mt. Katahdin, the mountain where Sean marked the end of his thru hike of the Appalachian Trail and Maya took fellow Bowdoin students on hiking trips.
We are so excited to be married in Maine and to (hopefully) spend our lives together there. Maya is currently pursuing her MAT in Art Education, and Sean will begin medical school in the fall.
