Maine coastal wedding weekend of Lucy and Jon in Castine

by

Destination weddings come in many varieties and in Maine, locations abound! Lucy and Jon's destination wedding brought us to Castine, a seaside town best known for the Maine Maritime Academy. This sleepy coastal town was the perfect backdrop to showcase Maine to Jon's southern roots. Everyone we spoke with throughout the day was pleasant and accommodating, in a southern gentleman and gentlewoman sort of way. The thick southern accents were great to hear on the Maine coast and we were happy that this wedding was introducing so many people to Maine.

Lucy's family has spent years summering in Castine, or more appropriately on a private island off the coast. The island was an amazing place to meet and we were lucky enough to have Jon join us there for a first look. Jon has spent a decent amount of time there with Lucy's family, which we were reminded of in numerous toasts throughout the weekend.

The wedding ceremony took place at Trinity Episcopal Church, an intimate stone sanctuary on the outskirts of Castine. The reception was at Fort Madison which was walking distance and allowed everyone to linger, walking at their own pace to the reception for cocktails. The fort provided a great view, including the family's private island off in the distance.

There was a first for me in 12 years of shooting weddings: a wedding crasher caught the bouquet! She stepped in front of all the single ladies and proceeded to grab the bouquet and act like she had won the lottery.  I took one look at Lucy and could tell something was amiss; she demanded the flowers from the crasher and tossed them again to a more deserving recipient!
Lucy and Jon, thanks so much for introducing us to Castine, bringing us to your island and allowing us to experience that wonderful southern charm!

How they met, in their own words:

Lucy and Jon met in January 2004 at Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH. Lucy joined The Dartmouth, the college newspaper, where Jon was the sports editor. After a few weeks of flirtatious pen tossing, Jon invited Lucy to his 21st birthday party. Lucy attended the party, but left early to go meet other friends. Jon was distressed and sent her a number emails encouraging her to return. Lucy went back and they ended up spending the evening sitting in the lobby of Lucy's dorm talking about their interests, families, and life experiences. They have been together ever since.

Jon and Lucy got engaged in the middle of the Hanover green in June 2012 after visiting "the D" office where they met and other sentimental college spots.
