Jamie and Ian's outdoor wedding on Portland's Eastern Promenade

by

Jamie and Ian were married on an idyllic August afternoon under bluebird skies on Portland's Eastern Promenade.  As a resident of the East End, I had been long looking forward to this (very) local celebration, and the opportunity to photograph in the neighborhood's beloved Eastern Promenade Park.

The day actually started on the other side on town at Jamie's sister's spot overlooking the Western Promenade.  Laughs were shared as mom, sister and bridesmaids helped with final preparations and the donning of Jamie's classic, elegant dress.  All buttoned up on the West, we traveled east, then loaded aboard the famous Narrow Gauge Railroad for the final approach to Fish Point.  An intimate and familial ceremony followed, where officiant and brother-of-the-bride Zach gave a fine service highlighted (at least for me) by a quote from the late Tupac Shakur.

Following the nuptials it was back aboard the classic steam train, then up to another spot straight out of our city's history, the esteemed Portland Club.  Upstairs it was the crack of pool balls, downstairs the clink of glasses, while lively conversation permeated the halls and parlors.  Though a guest list around 140 may not bring to mind an intimate wedding, this celebration certainly felt as such.  Jamie and Ian's warm personalities surely had plenty to do with it, and their infectious energy on the dance floor fueled the party late into the evening.

Congratulations Jamie and Ian!  Was a pleasure to work with you and your friends and families...

How they met, in Jamie's words:

Ian and I grew up about 15 minutes apart in Central Maine (me in Raymond, him in Poland) and met through a mutual friend our senior year of high school. We dated for a while, but were in college far from each other (me in Vermont, him in North Carolina) and it didn't last. Years later, Ian was living in New York City and ran into my brother on the street in the East Village. He emailed me to tell me how nice it was to see him on a day that I happened to be traveling down to the city for the wedding of a friend (I was in medical school in upstate NY at the time) and we started seeing each other again. We dated long distance for two years with more success than our previous attempt to do so, and moved to Boston together two years ago when I started my residency at a hospital here.
