During his welcome at the reception, Maureen's father invited everyone to take a moment to think about their dreams- big or small- and commit to revisiting them on this, her daughter's wedding date, each year as a reminder and progress marker in attaining them as he tearfully acknowledged his dear Maureen's dreams coming true on this day. It was poignant and powerful, a bit of a surreal study in how quickly life passes as I envisioned myself in that position as a parent of a bride or groom one day, and also a swift wake-up call to start reaching for my own goals with intention.
The day began that morning at the Hilton Garden Inn in Portland with busy beauty activity and shrills of excitement for the girls, and a similar busy scene but more calm setting for Steve and the guys at the nearby Portland Harbor Hotel. Steve and Maureen would meet against a wall before their ceremony, hands outstretched around a corner to touch but not see one another, to help ease nerves and ground them both before an emotionally touching formal service at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.
A quick trolley ride with fist bumps and high fives down to the ferry terminal followed, and soon, we were all whisked away on the bay aboard a private charter to nearby Peaks Island. Sounds of a steel pan filled the air as we cycled through the formality of family portraits along the shore, and later Maureen, Steve and I would escape to a nearby beach alone stopping to sip a cool cup of lemonade bought en route. Cute.
These two, their love, and their fun energy was infectious. It had everyone around them beaming, too, reveling in the seemingly puppy-dog nature of their affections and celebrations. Before long a ferry beckoned us to return to Portland, the night sky dotted with stars- symbols of so many wishes come true.
Congrats you two. I am so happy to have met you and will happily support your pie in the sky dream of moving to Maine, too!
