Alexis and Janis' late summer celebration at Laudholm Farm in Wells, Maine

Alexis and Janis were married at the treasured Laudholm Farm on the Wells Reserve.  Having attended the gorgeous wedding of good friends Julia and Dave at Laudholm last year, the couple fell in love with the place and booked it up early.  (Lucky for us at emilie inc, they also hired the same photography company!)  It's easy to understand why the Wells Reserve is such a desirable spot to be married.  The farm sits atop a hill in a wide open meadow, with barn, farm house, and out buildings all painted a warm mustard yellow.  Outdoor ceremony on the lawn, photos in the meadow, dinner in the tent, and a barn dance party; Laudholm has all the bases covered.  Graced with a mild breeze, and warm afternoon rays, the scene was idyllic.

Before heading over to the Reserve, Janis suited up in an impeccable tux with brother and best man Andrejs at the Kennebunk Inn.  Alexis' preparations took place at a beach house in Wells, with sisters Mara and Claire, and Maid of Honor Alice helping her into a simple elegant dress with sash tied at the waist.  Alexis' and Janis' supporting cast did more than just live up to the bill.  Sisters gave a moving reading at the ceremony, and a humorous yet heartfelt toast following dinner.  Alice almost stole the show with two songs, one at the ceremony, one at the reception; the latter co-written with Alexis in elementary school.  Andrejs was integral to many facets of the affairs, MCing the reception, giving a brotherly toast, and helping organize on the dance floor.

And that leads me to the highlight of the barn dance: the Latvian traditional dance led by Janis' family.  For the second time in a month I was to learn about and witness a dance style that was new to me.  A couple of weddings back, I learned of the Contra dance in Meredith, NH.  On this fine day it was the ancient Latvian Micosana.  The tradition involves multiple parts including the bride dancing with all the single males and groom with all the single females, and then concentric rings of guests encircling the lucky couple.  Alexis was the belle of the ball, and received a crown signifying her status as a married woman.

Alexis and Janis, it was a pleasure to be a part of your celebration, thanks very much for having me!  Veiksmi! (Good Luck!)
