Lake Huron, Michigan wedding of Lauren and John

by

"It is a privilege to be here."

Lauren's mom Linda said this to me the day before her daughter's wedding while standing on one end of the vast green lawn that stretched all the way to the road and back to the shore of Lake Huron.  Right then, I felt it.  I felt privileged to have that place, that moment, this wedding be the reason for my first trip ever to Michigan.

Lauren and John decided to marry at her family's cottage in Applegate, Michigan.  It's really her grandmother's residence and with it being a little difficult for her to move around, they wanted to make sure she could attend the wedding.  Her presence coupled with stories from Lauren about what life was like growing up there and hearing Linda tell me her memories of her childhood and riding the tractor, I could feel their history and the importance of documenting this this wedding weekend for Lauren, John, and their family and friends.

Wedding day morning, it poured.  But spirits were watching over us and dried out all the rain for the rest of the day allowing for a beautiful ceremony under the tree at the beach.  Lake Huron was serene and a milky blue-green color.  Lauren and John were illuminated with love.  Six years in the making and now married.

Sisters, moms, dads, and family.  Heavy barn doors, big tractors and a tree-lined driveway, the dirt packed down by generations before on those same old tractors.  Friends and football, beers and barbecue.  Hugs and kisses, holding hands, flower girls, and parent dances.  Antique couches, homemade sweets.  Quiet moments, wedding rings.  A red book filled with old love poems.  A weekend filled with new love poems, Lauren and John writing their own.

It was a privilege to be there.

Lauren and John, thank you for allowing me to be with you in Michigan for such a memorable weekend!  I seriously hope I end up retreating to the shores of Lake Huron again and exploring the rest of the state some day -- a special place.  I wish you all the best adventures across the pond in London, continuing to "write" your newlywed love poems.
