Like many of the emilie inc. couples, Kristen and Dan planned their wedding from out of state. Just shy of a year ago, my role in their planning began. Kristen is originally from Cape Elizabeth and Dan is originally from Kansas City where they reside, so we kept in touch via phone chats and emails to figure out the photography for their wedding day. We knew we wouldn't meet in-person at the studio until the week of when they flew in for the wedding. They were laid back with it all, but clearly invested in making sure the day would be enjoyable for their friends and family. Heather Cuzzi of Cairn Event Consulting worked with them for several months leading up to and including the big day, designing a wonderful celebration and executing it beautifully. Hiring a coordinator, I feel, was another helpful choice Kristen and Dan made in planning their wedding from out of state.
One of my favorite venues was the backdrop for Kristen and Dan's wedding: Wentworth Lodge in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. Both the ceremony and reception were there. Clouds rolled in and out all day and eventually chilly air blew in during formal group portraits and the blankets from the Lodge were put to good use. Kristen and her bridesmaids could have been in an L.L.Bean shoot with those blankets and Bean boots. They were troopers in their sleeveless dresses in that cold!
Under the sailcloth tent was decked out beautifully. It was warm and cozy with a creamy white and gold chevron pallet, complemented by blonde wood chairs, sprigs of evergreen, hints of aqua colored vases, and pops of pink and tangerine colored flowers. Kristen's grandmother's dictionary was turned into a guest book and added to the homey, inviting feeling in the tent. Kate and Josh of Pocket Brunch kept guests' bellies nice and full (except for late-night pizza's the bride and groom had ordered for munching on after burning all those calories on the dance floor from the band Jones'n who kept folks movin'!).
After a first dance and joint parent dances, some sweet (and humorous!) toasts were given during sunset. But we had a little remaining light from dusk, so Kristen, Dan, and I snuck out to grab a few quiet moments of just the two of them around the Lodge. I always remind couples the importance of this time together. Sneaking away for even just a couple snaps amidst all the reception revelry will be appreciated when looking back at their wedding day, usually one of the first alone moments as a married couple. Oftentimes, these shots are some of my favorite.
Kristen and Dan, congratulations on your wedding! You two were so fun to be with, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to have documented such a big moment in your lives! All the best and keep in touch!
