When I met Casey she told me about how both her and Gardiner's families have a history in Hanover, home to Dartmouth College, and how special this place is to them. She described the drive through the Upper Valley, the town green, the adorable shops lining the main street. I, too, have a place in my heart for this very same area. I worked at the local paper, the Valley News, during my newspaper days and fell in the love with its rolling hills, meandering waters, and tight-knit communities. I've always felt a sense of peace when I've lived or visited there, so I was really excited to share this with Casey. She had no idea of my Upper Valley connection when she booked me for her wedding, so it was a pleasant surprise that I was already so familiar with this place she and Gardiner chose to celebrate their big day.
This area is also known for having somewhat unpredictable weather (similar to here in Maine) and it sure did surprise us when snow started falling on the Dartmouth green during family formals before the ceremony! It wasn't supposed to arrive until the following morning, but we watched huge flakes fall from the sky, sticking to everything in sight. And it didn't stop until the next morning! Casey and Gardiner took it all in stride and it did lend a romantic feel to the rest of the day. I know these two will never forget that unexpected guest to their wedding, and laugh over how they had to run from the church to their reception at the Hanover Inn as it came falling down around them.
How they met, in their own words:
Gardiner and Kathryn ("Casey") have actually known each other their
whole lives. When both of their fathers started Tuck Business School in
1977, the two became fast friends along with their wives. A lifelong
friendship began and Gardiner and Casey grew up as family friends. When
Casey's mother and stepfather were married in 2000 (at the Hanover Inn),
Gardiner (age 12) attended the wedding with his parents and Casey (age
13) told her mom afterwards, "Gardiner Parker was the only boy who asked
me to dance!"... 8 years later Gardiner's sister Kate was getting
married in Boston and Casey attended the wedding with her parents. All
grown-up and dressed up, Gardiner and Casey were reunited, and Gardiner
says - he spotted her across the room and that was that (once he broke
up with his girlfriend)... and so it took "just one look" (their first
dance song). Casey and Gardiner embarked on many trips between UVM and
Colby College over those next few months before settling in Boston
post-graduation and eventually to Portland, ME, where they have been for
the last 3 years (and where Gardiner proposed).
