I was so excited to see Mary-Erin and Kai since I hadn't seen them together since their engagement session on Mackworth Island last fall. These two have been busy, as Mary-Erin is the Executive Director of the State Democratic Committee, and Kai is an entrepreneur and part-owner of Buoy Local, a new company that supports local businesses. They are total Portlanders, so it only made sense that they would marry here.
Mary-Erin got ready in her childhood home, an amazing older house in the heart of the East End, complete with narrow, steep staircases and beautiful architectural touches. We headed from there to the ceremony, which was held at the Cathedral of Immaculate Conception, where the bride grew up going to grammar school. I loved that it was held in the smaller chapel off to the side, as it lent a cozy, familial feeling to the event. After some quick portraits at the Eastern Prom, we drove up to Shady Lane Farm in New Gloucester for the cocktail hour and reception. It was my first time shooting here, and I truly appreciated the rustic, farm-y vibe, complete with chickens and a sprawling hayfield.
The barn looked stunning with coral touches and succulents scattered along every surface. Cafe lights strung low over the tables cast a warm light over the scene. The evening lingered on in the most relaxed way, with meaningful toasts, delicious food, and finally some serious dancing.
Mary-Erin and Kai, I had such a lovely time with you two and hope to see you (and Mackworth) around town soon!
How they met, in their own words:
Mary Erin and Kai met on July 3 at a little place called the Great Lost
Bear. Kai, who isn't typically known to be an extrovert, spotted M.E.
and decided to sit down next to her and chat her up. They had both
recently moved back to Portland from Washington, DC and weren't sure
their next steps. M.E. had thought she'd move back to DC after the
summer, but ended up falling in love with Kai AND getting a job at the
Maine Democratic Party. Kai was accepted to the MBA program at U Maine
and started his own small business. This July 3 will mark 5 years since
they first met.
When planning their wedding, they wanted a mix of
traditional and fun. M.E. grew up on Munjoy Hill and attended Cathedral
Grammar School and had always envisioned getting married in the Chapel.
Kai is passionate about the local economy and wanted to incorporate as
much local food and talent as possible. They both love Maine's natural
beauty and being able to enjoy the outdoors, so having the reception at
Shady Lane Farm was a natural choice.
