Nicole and Kyle were married at the Asticou Inn in Northeast Harbor, Maine.
In preparation for writing this blog entry, I reread the story about how Nicole and Kyle met during happy hour at a bar in New York City called Turtle Bay. This quick description in their own words gets me every time. Familiar with the area from my early years in the city, I could just picture the scene, with no small amount of nostalgia for that time. And no small amount of happiness that this couple, who fit so well together, met in such a spontaneous and unscripted way.
The Asticou hosted our couple's fabulous group of guests; ceremony on the sweeping lawn by the harbor, cocktails on the front porch, dinner and dancing to follow. This was a destination wedding at its best, and by the time I arrived, the group was enjoying their temporary home away from home. Through their large wedding parties, and the kindness of their families, I quickly gathered how many people Nicole and Kyle have touched in their lives.
I can't help but feel and need to express how lucky I am to have such incredible people to work with and capture in photographs. Thank you Nicole and Kyle! And thank you to your entire wedding party, and to your friends and families. This day was an absolute pleasure!
How they met, according to Nicole:
Kyle and I met in June 2008 while each living in New York City. I had just worked a night shift at the hospital and was trying to get some sleep, when my friends began bugging me to come and meet them at Turtle Bay (a local watering hole) for happy hour. I finally gave in and trekked the 20 blocks down to the bar to grab "a drink". Upon walking in I was bombarded with my two girlfriends and this guy they had met named Kyle, who they had told all about me and how we would be perfect together. Kyle and I briefly spoke and I believe he bought me a beer, but I was more focused on visiting with my girlfriends. After about an hour, I overheard Kyle talking to someone about his time on Semester at Sea and his adventures around the world. I quickly became interested and started up a conversation with him. We talked for hours and had an instant connection. So much so that we soon found ourselves saying good night to our respective groups of friends and heading out for our first dinner out together. To this day we continue to spend our anniversary "first meet" at Turtle Bay, enjoying their happy hour special $2 Coors Light. We are so excited to be married in Maine, where I grew up, and where Kyle has grown to love spending time. We love the idea of a "destination" wedding that can become a wonderful memory for all of our friends and family. We both have a special connection with Mount Desert Island. During a camping trip there in 2010 we noticed the Asticou Inn on a drive in to Bar Harbor and stopped the car to admire the beauty of the inn. We both remarked, later that day, what a perfect spot The Asticou would be to have a wedding. Little did we know that four years later we would be celebrating our special day on the banks of Northeast Harbor, in that very spot.
