Kennebunkport wedding of Catherine and John at The Colony Hotel

by

When I think of this wedding I can't help but remember how included I felt in such a wonderful celebration.  As a photographer I like to melt into the background for most of the day, but it also feels really good to be recognized and welcomed into such a momentous day as part of it, instead of just on the outside documenting it. The moment I arrived Catherine beamed a huge smile at me as she looked up from under a pile of curls as her hair was being done.  I was especially happy to see her looking so at ease, because the weather forecast for this day was very touch and go.  It would rain in the afternoon, but when?? It kept changing and she was happy to just roll with it and see what happened.

After a sweet little ceremony in Biddeford Pool, the rain did indeed come as Catherine and John were saying hello to their guests in a receiving line.  We booked it into the trolley, and by the time we stopped to do formal photos it had stopped, but the skies remained threatening.  We made it through formals and even had some time for portraits of just the two of them as thunder clapped in the distance.

Guests were treated to a lovely dinner back at The Colony as I kept an eye on the skies, hoping we could sneak back out for a few more photos.  At one point I turned and saw some pretty magnificent yellow beams spilling in through a window, and knew we had to get back out there.  Catherine and John were totally game, even though it was raining a bit, and we were treated to some beautiful light and stormy skies in the background.

I'm convinced that the good karma these two (and their families) bring to their lives was responsible for such an amazing day, with just a few drops to dodge.  I was grateful to let it rub off on me and will always remember how gracious they were to make me feel so included in such a sweet celebration.
