Tara and Sean's Fenway Park engagement session

An engagement shoot in Fenway Park?!  Sign me up.  I was psyched when I learned Tara and Sean had access to a sky box at the ball park.  And during the Frozen Fenway event, no less -- an ice hockey rink is thrown on the field for collegiate games (Maine beat BU, my grad school alma mater, that day).  Ironically, it was a balmy 60 degrees and raining that day, not dumping snow and frigid like you'd imagine an event like that to be.  However, I think Tara, Sean, and I welcomed the warmth.  We were limited to the sky box for photos, but it was still so cool to shoot there -- we had plenty of photos to make and not enough time.  We wanted to make sure to hit the other spots in their former Boston neighborhoods that also had meaning to them.

While the rain was a bummer, they were such troopers traipsing around the city.  We made it to all the locations they wanted photos at, and they even had time to grab a beer at one of their favorite pubs, 21st Amendment.  Tara took full advantage of stealing snuggles and smooches from Sean throughout the day.  And while Sean says he's not a fan of public displays of affection, I am certain that deep down he did not mind one bit :)

I am photographing their September wedding at Bald Peak in Moultonborough, NH and can't wait to meet both their families!  Tara's mother is so excited for these two, she made a save-the-date sign for them to take a photo with.  After our engagement session, Sean and Tara were headed to Sean's brother's house for the Patriots football game.  They were told to bring festive signature cocktails and Sean impressed me with his array of red, white (well, clear), and blue vodka-themed recipes he concocted.  See what I mean? I can't wait to meet everyone!  September will be here before we know it!

we've tied the knot with Inn by the Sea

Yippee! We're happy to announce a new formal partnership with Inn by the Sea in Cape Elizabeth, Maine!

A longtime favorite venue, emilie inc. is now the exclusive photography studio for mid-week elopements taking place at this beautiful oceanview property. We are proud to be joining Tracy Albert and her team to provide our documentary storytelling this upcoming season.

Whether you live locally or want to make Maine an elopement destination, you should check out (or stop by!) the Inn to take in the view, the yummy food, the spa and their gorgeously renovated rooms. It's not a surprise the Inn is regularly being recognized by Travel and Leisure Magazine as one of the world's best.

We love to photograph there, but we also love to stay there, too. Emilie and her family (including their pup; the Inn is super dog-friendly) make it a regular "getaway" weekend, as have several of our staff. Even with such close proximity to Portland, the Inn succeeds in feeling like a far away destination.

We have been lucky to photograph many wonderful weddings at the Inn, including this past summer when Whitney joined Stephanie and Casey for their destination seaside nuptials. We are delighted with our new relationship with the Inn and look forward to a busy year!

getting local with Adrienne Horty

There's nothing more rewarding than beginning new and nourishing old relationships within the local business community. We encourage and motivate each other to develop our businesses to their highest potential and work together to showcase our best sides. We are all aiming to hit the bullseye on our collective goal of creating a successful, booming wedding industry in Maine. Locals helping locals, creating business partnerships and personal friendships along the way.

I was lucky and honored to spend a few hours with Adrienne Horty, owner of The Refinery. We recapped 2013, chatted about what's new for her event plannning business in 2014 and brainstormed how we can play a part in helping each other grow.

Adrienne has a drive and motivation to succeed that's hard to come by in most people. She made the big decision to leave her corporate job in California in 2012, with hopes and passion to start her own event and wedding planning business. Her first client was herself! She tackled her wedding details with fervor, ease and perfection and knew that her career change was the right choice. Success #1!

The Refinery was founded in spring of 2013 and Adrienne jumped into a busy start and a great season filled with day-of wedding coordination and one complete start-to-finish wedding. Success #2!

You will find when you meet Adrienne that she doesn't like too much time on her hands or letting her creative super powers sit idle. Looking at the future of the Maine wedding industry she wondered what it would be like if we all got together and created something great. Alas, BESWOON was born! If you haven't heard yet, Beswoon is the first annual curated bridal showcase being held on Saturday, March 8th at the Westin Portland Harborview Hotel. It's a non-traditional bridal showcase where you will be able to experience three different weddings- each a different theme! You can taste the menus, hear the music, see the decor and talk to the talented vendors who can help you pull all of the details together for your big day. Role on a daily basis: As an event and wedding planner I am there to help my clients design, plan and manage their big day, whether that is a wedding day or a birthday!

Biggest passion: Brainstorming or creating something.

Latest obsession: Candy (or really anything sweet) and BESWOON

Largest achievement: Completing the original Greek Marathon, followed by starting my own business!

If you could do anything or go anywhere what/where would it be?: Wow, that's a hard question to answer... I would like to travel to as many countries as possible in my lifetime (and that means I still have quite a bit to go!)

Best tip you ever received: Do what you love.

January Greendrinks at Portland's Ocean Gateway

Intermittent downpours did nothing to deter a solid crowd of Greendrinkers from attending the January event at Portland's Ocean Gateway

Perched at the end of the long pier on east Commercial Street, this modern building boasts 5600sq ft of unobstructed free space and a capacity of 799 heads.  Arriving early to wrench together the giant erector set that is the Maine Snapshot Studio, I was impressed with both the scale of the room and its sweeping views of Portland Harbor and the islands.  Waves of attendees arrived as forecasted, and soon the space was humming.  Consumers for Affordable Maine Health Care was the featured organization, a group advocating for access to affordable health care for all Maine residents.  Also fresh on the Greendrinks docket, Maine Beer Company joined the impressive roster of brewers pouring their goodness, an addition that clearly excited the droves of hop-heads in attendance.

my morning with Kate Martin

Would you like to meet one of the friendliest, most down-to earth event planners ever?! If you haven't yet crossed paths, please e-meet Kate Martin, owner of Beautiful Days. With her incredibly open and charismatic personality, you feel like you've known her forever after just 10 minutes of meeting her (or at least that's exactly how I felt!). I invited Kate to visit with us to chat about what's been keeping her so busy.

First and foremost, if you haven't yet, you MUST check out Kate's new website that she launched last week to celebrate Beautiful Days' 10th anniversary. It's filled with beautiful weddings, flowers, lighting, decor and so much more. Wow, congrats Kate! And don't forget to check out her event rental site as well, Maine Prop House.

Beautiful Days wrapped up an exciting 2013 season of events and weddings that left Kate and her team feeling satisfied, successful, happy, hungry for next season and exhausted. It wouldn't be the end of event season without being a little tired, right?! A little time to catch her breath and Kate is back to running full force gearing up for a big 2014.

It's been a pleasure working with Kate over the years, especially on a few stand-out weddings from this past season. Ali and Jason's summer wedding in Cape Neddick and Sarah and Drew's fall wedding at the Newagen Seaside Inn were both fabulously designed, planned and managed by Kate and her team. She also did a stunning job with the design and flowers at Alex and Schuyler's grand Lake Winnipesaukee boathouse wedding. We had the pleasure of spending a summer day with Kate and her family for a fun, outdoor family portrait session where Kate, her husband Daytes and their son Wyatt let loose and enjoyed the sunshine and each other. It was a wonderful day with a loving family that won't soon be forgotten.

If you could do anything or go anywhere what/where would it be?: If I could do anything it would be to run courses in local schools to teach kids how to garden, where our food comes from, how good food can be easily grown in our backyards, how to cook and how eating healthy, locally grown food can improve their health and well being and connectedness to their community. I would travel to Italy, France, Spain and Greece exploring farms, local cooking, home gardens....but I do have a fantasy that my son (who of course will be smart enough to be anything) chooses to be a surfer and bass guitar player and he and his band travel the world playing at surf spots and I am their cook and manager ;)



Where you spend most of your time online: I don’t really have any favorites but I do a lot of exploring - anything that offers some beauty and inspiration but I do check the Daily Beast everyday for keeping up with the world. 

Best tip you ever received: You can be as creative as you want to be but if you can’t run a business you won’t succeed

 
Education: Study abroad Florence, Italy studio art, photography and photography internship (I spoke little Italian, he spoke little English - it was brilliant!), University of Wisconsin Madison, Political  science and blender drinks, University of Berkeley extension in San Francisco Interior Design, two Nantucket summers in a kitchen with two insane yet brilliant chefs, my introduction and early education to music that matters when I was 18 exploring the amazing record collection of a family I was babysitting - Allman brothers, Mississippi John Hurt, Aretha Franklin, Little Feat, Otis reading - my whole music world opened up from there!

Tina and Ben's Caribbean wedding on St. Thomas

New England experienced some of the coldest temps we have seen in 50 years in the days leading up to 2014. Whistling winds, huge snow drifts, and icy roads made it all the more difficult. Well, so we heard anyway.  Megan and I had jetted off to the beautiful island of St. Thomas in the Caribbean to photograph the nuptials of Tina and Ben. Tina's family is from New Brunswick and Ben's is from New Hampshire, so they lucked out and avoided the horrible weather, too. We felt a little guilty that loved ones back home were suffering, but nothing that little sun and sand (and rum drinks) couldn't fix.

The party started as guests began trickling in a couple of days before the wedding. Most people opted to stay at Sugar Bay where the wedding was held, and could take advantage of the resort lounge chairs, snorkeling and swim-up bar (hard life, right?). Seeing Tina and Ben's worlds collide, it was obvious how perfect they are for each other. It felt as though everyone had known each other for ages, laughing and shrieking with joy in a beautiful mixture of English and French.

We all got to ring in the new year together, complete with party hats and champagne. What a festive way to start 2014! Thank you Tina and Ben, and your amazing family and friends, for making us feel like part of the crew!

How they met, in Ben's words:

We met through field hockey while Tina was coaching at Providence College, I was an umpire that was looking to get more experience with higher level games. Tina ran clinics and play-days that needed officials that were willing to donate their time and there I was. I would travel down from NH to work, for free, while I was finishing my BA @ Plymouth State. We created a professional correspondence and Tina needed someone to officiate on a Tuesday night for their Scrimmage against UNH. Previous to this game Tina offered to pay me for a play-day that Providence hosted with a burger and a beer; I was finally able to cash in on April, 20th when she brought me out to Snookers in Providence. We talked for hours over that burger and beer, I thought she was pretty cool, she thought I was feeding her lines that I had to skip my Canadian Studies class to come down and that I was a French major @ PSU. Both being true; I was lucky to have found a great woman, and luckily she still thinks she found a great guy...really I was just the first American she found that could speak French! We went to a Sox game later that week with friends, Great Big Sea after that, a move to Maine; then a special ring at a special pond hockey tournament!
