the other side of the camera
Portland Press Herald veteran photographer Doug Jones (he's been shooting for 30+ years) came to my studio yesterday morning to photograph me for John Rolfe's Shoptalk column which appears in today's paper. What an odd experience to be photographed for the newspaper. He walked in with a camera body and a wide angle lens (yes, I realize I look as wide as a cow. And what's with that tuft behind my right ear anyway?) and a flash on a monopod. He literally took 4 frames, and went on his way. I asked him if he had a lot of assignments that day, and he said things at the newspaper were painfully slow. I remember my newspaper days when I would spend as much time as necessary to meticulously get the perfect portrait, that both me and my subject were happy with (and would never pull out the wide angle lens!).
I digress... The article itself is quite fun and John did a decent job reporting everything I was rambling about (could there be any more run-on sentences?), with few errors (such as I don't have a wedding in South Africa, I had just received inquiry for one the morning of the interview. Fingers crossed, because that would be a great adventure!).

WPPI 2009!
As many of you know, the annual WPPI (Wedding & Portrait Photographers International) convention in Las Vegas is a very special event as it is where I met J in person for the first time in 2006 (he was my account rep at Pictage for the three years prior).
The convention attracts more than 11,000 wedding and portrait photographers from around the globe for a week of workshops, seminars and the biggest tradeshow you've ever seen. Vegas is the perfect setting to network and socialize with all the creative types.
Well, earlier today I received an invitation to lead a master class at next year's convention!! Being a master class instructor is a huge deal and I am beyond honored to be asked (of course I said YES! right away). Participants pay extra to attend a master class in a small group for a 2-hour session.
Photographers: I don't yet know the details of the exact date (sometime between February 14-19, 2009), but I'll be sure to keep you posted of the details if you are interested!
So cool!

ISO graphic designer
Three years ago I incorporated my business and changed the name from Emilie Sommer Photography to emilie inc. An integral part of that rebranding process was graphic and web designer Sharon Reiley, then owner of Idea Builder, based in North Attleboro, Massachusetts. Sharon has since had a beautiful baby girl Paige and has closed her design business. She is now focusing on children's portraiture. I'm so excited for Sharon's early success in photography, but am selfishly missing my go-to design expert.
I'm in need of someone equally as talented to help with a few little projects (notecards, price lists, etc) who has a similar style and who will consistently carry my brand. If you're a graphic designer and have some time for a few quick freelance projects, drop me an email with some samples or a website link where I may view some of your recent work.
Thanks!

227 Congress
After last fall's studio nightmare, I am happy to announce that after months of searching emilie inc. has found a home. The space is not as lofty and grand as the other, but it's a well-lit, newly-renovated gem and the landlord is someone J and I feel we would be friends with, not just business partners. That counts for a lot in my book.
It's at the base of Munjoy Hill in Portland's East End on the second floor above the North Star Cafe (a chill vegetarian cafe with live acoustic music every night of the week, and sometimes tango lessons!) and next to The Snug (a new trendy Irish pub). Within a block is Angela Adams (the infamous rug and handbag maker), a yoga studio, a few salons, trendy clothing shops and yarn stores. It's definitely the "up and coming" part of Portland, and I'm proud to be a part of the resurgence (up next is the transformation of a building around the corner into a multi-level restaurant and rooftop martini bar. Sweet!). And the best part? There are no meters! Gasp! Yes, there actually is free street parking in Portland and I've found it!
My space is 1,300sf and includes an open area for meeting with clients and hosting workshops, a kitchenette (I purchased the cabinets yesterday- chocolate brown to match the emilie inc. branding), an office nook, a small shooting space (with exposed brick walls), a full bath and private rooftop deck (the deck will be completed this summer). There are filtered views of the harbor and the bay from either sides.
Remember a few weeks ago I wrote about not knowing how I should celebrate my 30th birthday? Well, this is the perfect present! My lease starts April 1st... my birthday!
The renovations are still going on, but I took a few pictures with my iPhone this morning when I signed the lease. They aren't the best, but give you an idea (I know this is going to sound crazy, but I didn't want to take any with my professional camera just yet, so as to not jinx myself with what happened last time!).
Tracy Davis from Urban Dwellings is helping create a gorgeous interior space. Check back for updates as everything comes together. And expect a fabulous opening reception sometime in May! Hooray!

paper free booking
In an effort to be both more environmentally-friendly and more efficient, I have implemented a studio management software program called ShootQ. Developed by our friends from LaCour in Atlanta, ShootQ allows clients to view packages, securely sign a contract and pay for photography coverage (via PayPal), all online! It will eliminate a lot of paper and lost time sending snail mail.
Clients will also receive email notifications when it's time to pay your balance and for other timely necessities, such updating you on the status of your album design or when a product has shipped! And instead of submitting paper timelines and wedding day notes, clients will be able to submit all of that pertinent information online! Pretty sweet, right?!
(If you are a previously booked '08 client, this doesn't affect your contract but I'll upload your information so you can benefit from this great program, too!)
The only change involved is to the client access section of emilieinc.com. This space was previously used to post pricing and contracts and will now shift to a resource area for prospective and current clients.
Any questions? Let me know! And if you come across any hiccups while using the program, please let me know that, too! Also worth noting, ShootQ is also a generous sponsor of Roots Workshop! Thanks, ShootQ!

perfect pricing™ Pink Initiative
I am excited to formally announce the implementation of emilie inc.'s perfect pricing™ Pink Initiative.
As you know, perfect pricing™ is the à la carte pricing structure I created for my wedding packages (in addition to a base creative fee, clients add the elements they want to customize their wedding photography coverage-- an engagement session, digital negatives, an album, etc.). In a period where people are often over-scheduled and short on time to give of themselves, I thought it most appropriate to commit a percentage of each wedding creative fee to breast cancer research. The charity I have chosen is The National Breast Cancer Foundation.**
"The (NBCF) extends women's lives through education about breast cancer and early detection. The organization provides hope to women and families affected by breast cancer through a community of caring support and encouragement that enables those diagnosed with breast cancer to have fulfilling lives during their treatment and afterward." ~NBCF mission statement
The idea for the Pink Initiative is a personal one. 17 years ago last week, my mother's best friend Donna passed away from breast cancer. I was 12 years old then and can still recall visiting Donna in the hospital as if it were yesterday, watching as my mother carefully fed her lunch in bed and later applied her lipstick. It was my first experience losing someone to this disease and Donna's legacy has always been the motivation behind my involvement in breast cancer activities.
Donna's life has touched mine in another profound way, as well. In their sorrow, my mom and Donna's husband Steve helped each other in their shared grief and developed a friendship that eventually turned to love. Steve and my mom married, and I am blessed with a stepfather who I have long admired for his kindness, strength and compassion.
For many years since I have volunteered both time and money to breast cancer charities (including several walks, the most notable being the Avon 3-day, 60 mile walk from Baltimore to Washington, DC, in 2002 with my dear friend Andrea). I currently volunteer locally for the American Cancer Society's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer and Daffodil Days, and Komen's Race for the Cure.
I encourage you all to make time or give money to a charity that you are passionate about. If you would like to see where your favorite charity ranks in the use of its funds, check out the Charity Navigator, a very helpful service, by **clicking here.**
**Although the NBCF is the only charity that will benefit from the Pink Initiative, emilie inc. also gives annually to St. Jude's Children's Hospital and the Make-a-Wish Foundation.

PhotoPlus Expo, NYC
We're heading to Boston tomorrow night, and then to NYC through Saturday for the Photo Plus Expo at the Javits Center- a huge photography conference and tradeshow. Unlike the wedding photography conference I go to in Las Vegas each winter, this encompasses all areas of photography- fashion, editorial, fine art, weddings, travel, portraiture- you name it! There will be 20,000 photographers and vendors attending.
I am very excited to be speaking at the liveBooks booth at 11:30a on Saturday morning. If you are attending please stop by and introduce yourself!
Here is my talk topic (click image to enlarge):
We'll also be attending parties for PhotoShelter, Digital Railroad and GraphiStudio.
I'll have access to email and phone while I am traveling, so don't be afraid to get in touch. Have a great week!

introducing News Wedding Photographers
On the heels of that not-fun post about the studio, I do have some exciting news to share! As I'm sure you have noticed, there has been a mystery logo in the left sidebar that says News Wedding Photographers. It's a project I have been working on since May! If you click on that link it will actually take you to a website now!
These days, photojournalism is a very popular style of wedding photography and it can be confusing to inquiring brides and grooms to know who is legit and who is imitating the professionals. News Wedding Photographers is a directory of wedding photographers who have a background in news photography, like myself.
I am announcing NWP's launch here first, and will be sending out an email campaign to industry colleagues within the next few days! Please pass the word if you know a photographer who meets the requirements!

ShootQ
Our dear friends from LaCour in Atlanta have designed an amazing web-based studio management software program for photographers called ShootQ. They have been on the road to educate photographers about their product since June, and will be making a stop at the new studio in Portland on November 14th. Be sure to take a peek at the informative ShootQ website here, and if it looks like something that might benefit you and your business, sign up for the set-up party here (attendance required to purchase the software). I love it, and I'm sure your business will benefit from it, too! ShootQ is also a sponsor of Roots Workshop.

545 Congress
emilie inc. has found a home at 545 Congress Street in the arts district of Portland!
As you all know, I have been looking and looking for a studio space since I moved here three years ago. I nearly signed on a place in the Old Port by the water, but it needed a complete overhaul. Then I nearly signed at an old mill in Westbrook that was move-in ready and the rent was right, but I wasn't crazy about the location. Then I considered buying a loft condo in Portland, but knew being tucked away in an upper level residential building would be a bad move for exposure. At long last, while peeking in the windows of vacant storefronts on Congress Street the other week, I found it!
545 Congress used to be the Patagonia store, for those familiar with Portland. It's in the same building as White Heart (a trendy, urban lounge), the downtown Portland events office, and an organic Greek restaurant scheduled to open later this month. The upstairs consists of several New York style loft condos- a trend that is taking Portland by storm. Across the street is an LL Bean outlet store. And within a block is the Maine College of Art, 555 (a favorite upscale restaurant), a Starbucks (I'll do my best not to OD on pumpkin spice lattes) and many other shops and eateries.
Tracy Davis of Urban Dwellings is helping with the redesign of the space. I stumbled across her website months ago when researching the loft condo trend in Portland and am thrilled to be partnering with her on this project.
The space is nearly 2000sf (plus 800sf of storage in the basement. Wow!). There are soaring ceilings, bamboo floors, an exposed brick wall and low-voltage track lighting. There isn't too much work that needs to be done... aside from painting, cleaning, removing the counter & fitting rooms, and decorating (the fun part!). I hope to partner with a few other like-minded wedding vendors eventually (a bridal boutique of sorts), but will move forward with the renovations on my own at this point.
I hope to be open by mid-November and will surely keep you posted of the progress here. Be sure to check back for updated pictures! But for now, here are the "before" snapshots:
This is the exterior of the building. My space is on the far right. R to L after that is: the Greek restaurant (not open yet, so there is no sign and newspaper still shields the windows), the downtown Portland events office, and White Heart (which has al fresco seating at night. I wonder if the Greek place will too? Love that).

There are neat lamps just outside the storefront, as well as flags w/ Portland's motto: love. life. more. They just installed those beds and planted trees over the weekend.
Inside! Loving that exposed brick wall. And yes, the lime green paint is going immediately! As is the counter and florescent lighting (the track lighting stays).
Looking back toward the door (if you look closely, you'll notice LL Bean across the street in the left image).
This is the second half of the space, which will make a great shooting area, or room to expand with another vendor (or heck, tap dancing classes). The fitting rooms will be removed.
And this is me, alone in the new studio for the first time!
I am ecstatic about this! And, to be honest, I'm also completely terrified. Great rewards require great risk, as my mom likes to remind me often. I'm definitely up for the challenge! Thanks so much for your support during such an exciting time! emilie inc is growing!

introducing Roots Workshop!
I am so, so, so excited today! After planning since March, I can *finally* announce some big news!!!
Next summer I am hosting a photojournalism workshop for wedding photographers on Cape Cod! I've rented a great house on the water and gathered together a handful of dear friends and talented photographers and photo editors in the industry to teach.
You can learn more by checking out the website which launched today (and yes, that link in the left column is finally active)! If you know any wedding photographers who might benefit from this type of experience, please send 'em my way!
Many thanks to liveBooks for sponsoring the workshop with this great site!

facelift
Notice anything different about the blog?! It has been redesigned to look a bit more like my website and feature a wider posting area, enabling me to post BIG pictures! Wow!
You'll also notice a reorganized sidebar! Be sure to sign up for my e-newsletter if you haven't already... I will be sending out a summer issue in just a few weeks. I have two projects in the works (Roots Workshop and News Wedding Photographers) which you will notice are featured in the sidebar a bit prematurely. Those websites should be live within the next month. I will fill you in on them in greater detail then.
For those of you who subscribe to this blog using Bloglines, Technorati, etc., please note the address has changed to blog.emilieinc.net (There is a subscribe button if you scroll to the bottom of the blog).

emilieinc.net
As you may have noticed, the blog has been a bit of a mess lately. But thanks to my fantastic designer Sharon, it has all been safely moved to its new permanent home, www.emilieinc.net. So please bookmark this new site (and erase emilieinc.com/blog). You can always access this from my website if you get lost or forget.
Look for a redesign of the blog to match the new website in the weeks to come. Thanks for your patience!
One more day left to vote for your favorite dog photo... scroll down to last week's post about the details!

News: New website!
I am thrilled to announce the launch of my new website! It's much like my other website, but features more images, larger images, slideshows and more information- all of which I can update myself! (So if you see a picture of yourself up there and you'd rather it not be there, please let me know and I can remove it immediately).
An example of an information page- my bio
You'll notice an 'image info' option at the bottom of the portfolio pages. Rollover this and the caption of the image will appear. Cool!
There's also a password-protected client access page where clients can download current pricing, FAQ, contract, directions to the studio, etc.
This new site was created by liveBooks, the company J works for. I can't say enough good things about my experience working with them! Their customer service is amazingly quick, courteous and knowledgeable (everyone who works at liveBooks has some sort of photo background). Learn more about liveBooks and their CEO, Andy Patrick, here.
Unfortunately, in the process of switching servers my blog is homeless for a little bit. Please be patient as the new settings are transferred and I re-upload all the images. Sorry for the inconvenience!

contesting contests
I have a serious dislike for photography contests.
I cringe knowing that so many of my colleagues crave being recognized by their peers- in addition to the fact that it takes away time from business and money to enter.
Each quarter, however, my membership with the Wedding Photojournalist Association (WPJA) includes two free entries into their wedding photography contests (which determines how high a ranking you have on their lists by state). And each quarter, I enter two images and refuse to purchase additional credits.
Turns out, I placed with one of those freebie entries in the most recent contest in the Toasts category for a funny moment at Lisa and Ehren's wedding last spring (and I have placed twice before as well).
Darn. Perhaps I should enter more images?
I'm torn.
