Blog Nosh

J spotted this great online magazine Blog Nosh, that republishes blog posts of note with topics ranging from education to religion to art. Definitely bookmark Blog Nosh as a great one-stop-site for the best of the best. They featured my post about my first studio art walk from May. Thanks, J!

featured on Pictage

Hot on the heels of that not-so-favorable photo experience in the Press Herald yesterday, a Q&A with Pictage was posted on their blog today featuring some simple questions and a few of my images. Take a peek!

the other side of the camera

Portland Press Herald veteran photographer Doug Jones (he's been shooting for 30+ years) came to my studio yesterday morning to photograph me for John Rolfe's Shoptalk column which appears in today's paper. What an odd experience to be photographed for the newspaper. He walked in with a camera body and a wide angle lens (yes, I realize I look as wide as a cow. And what's with that tuft behind my right ear anyway?) and a flash on a monopod. He literally took 4 frames, and went on his way. I asked him if he had a lot of assignments that day, and he said things at the newspaper were painfully slow. I remember my newspaper days when I would spend as much time as necessary to meticulously get the perfect portrait, that both me and my subject were happy with (and would never pull out the wide angle lens!).

I digress... The article itself is quite fun and John did a decent job reporting everything I was rambling about (could there be any more run-on sentences?), with few errors (such as I don't have a wedding in South Africa, I had just received inquiry for one the morning of the interview. Fingers crossed, because that would be a great adventure!).

O, oh my

I was approached for an outtake from my Ladies' Home Journal assignment of Susan Walsh and her dog Lazlo last fall by O, The Oprah Magazine and it appears in the June issue. I'm so excited that Susan, and other like-minded animal rights activists, are getting such great press!

Coren Moore dresses

Very cool to see my images from Alisa and Coley's wedding last summer on the Coren Moore website. The designers behind the label, Coren and Lee, were friends from high school and attended college in New England. Now based in NY, their dresses appear in several dozen shops across the US. If you're searching for dresses for your bridesmaids, I definitely recommend checking out this label!

meeting Glenn

A few weeks ago I had the honor of taking publicity photos of Glenn Close at FetchDog headquarters in Portland in preparation for her appearance on the Martha Stewart show (which aired 3/17/08). Glenn and her husband David Shaw, founder of IDEXX, started FetchDog last year which is both a printed catalog of dog products, and an extensive website for shopping, researching various dog breeds, networking with other dog owners, and blogs (Glenn's blog below).

Walking into the office, the presence of dogs is the first thing you notice!

Glenn and Jake, in the conference room.

Product meeting in the conference room (her husband David is to her right).

Jake has the cutest under bite!

A quick snapshot of the staff and their pups.

FetchDog has some great things in the works that I can't write much about now, but am very excited to be a part of!

F-Stop beyond interview

I had the pleasure of sitting down with the incredible Ron Dawson of Cinematic Studios during WPPI in Las Vegas the other week for as part of his weekly F-Stop Beyond audio interview series (I posted a video he made from the week here). A live, unedited interview was a new experience for me so there are plenty of moments where I mess up what I'm trying to say, repeat something I've already said, and I think just about every response I begin with "um."

I was taken aback when, just a few questions in, he asked if my parents are married (which they aren't) and continued to press questions surrounding my parent's divorce. It's something I don't talk about openly very often because it happened so long ago and my family has moved on made peace with what happened. He also asked about questions I was better prepared to answer... how I got into photography, why weddings, future goals, etc.

It's about 35 minutes long. So if you have a spare half hour, click the green link below and have a listen to episode #30 (you can subscribe to the series on iTunes podcast).

What I did today

Curious?

Unfortunately I can't tell you what or who I photographed today. But perhaps if you watch Martha Stewart in the next week or two, you might spot it.

Sorry to be so vague, but I'll post more information as I find out myself. It's exciting!!

published: Ladies' Home Journal

Late last year I had the pleasure of photographing Lazlo, a 12-year-old Belgian sheepdog, for the Animal Affairs feature in the current issue of Ladies' Home Journal.

Lazlo's owner, Susan Walsh, and other family pets endured abuse (even death) from Susan's ex-husband during their divorce 7 years ago. Susan took her story to the state legislature and was the catalyst for the passing of a pet protection bill in 2006. Now in Maine, and several other states that have followed suit, the law protects not just spouses and partners of domestic abuse, but pets as well.

Meeting Susan was a humbling experience. She's a very simple, soft-spoken woman who has immense strength. The sign in front of her farm reads "Blessed Be Farm: Founded, 1984. Liberated 2001."

Whitney's Inn

I was thrilled to see many of the images that J and I took at Whitney's Inn in Jackson, NH, last month appear on the inn's website already! Whitney's was recently bought and renovated by Don and Joyce Bilger, who also own one of our favorite spots- the Inn at Jackson. Whitney's Inn sits at the base of Black Mountain, and the property includes the Shovel Handle Pub, a great apres ski spot (also used for rustic wedding receptions!). Don is a super nice guy and I'm thrilled to see his latest venture taking off! If you'd like to sneak away for an overnight, email me for a discount for your stay!

published: Ladies' Home Journal

A few months ago, I posted about the incredible story of the black lab named Molly who survived a boating accident in northern Maine last Memorial Day weekend, even tho her owner (Douglas Harmon) didn't. Molly swam to shore and then wandered for nearly 200 miles over the course of several weeks before she was found and reunited with her family.

I was honored when Ladies' Home Journal telephoned me to photograph this amazing dog at her Scarborough home. The article is in the February issue, on newsstands now. And although the magazine only had the space to run the studio portrait of Molly, I thought you might like to see some of the additional images from this emotional assignment.

The photo editor asked for both serious and fun images of Molly and the Harmon children (L to R) Jared, Ashley and Tim.

Peanut butter on Ashley's cheek helped make this scene a bit more lively!

Playing in the back yard.

Such beautiful afternoon light!

Home sweet home.

If only she could talk, I'm sure Molly has quite a tale to tell about how she made her way back home!

Sending continued strength and peace to the Harmon family! Thanks for welcoming me into your home and sharing your touching story.

magazine assignment

This afternoon I had the pleasure of photographing an assignment for Ladies' Home Journal.

Last Memorial Day weekend Douglas Harmon lost his life when he drowned in an accident while boating with his dog Molly in northern Maine. Molly survived and swam to shore. She then wandered for nearly 200 miles over the course of several weeks before she was found and reunited with her family. Wow.

You can read more about Molly's story in the local paper **here.** I will post my pictures from the shoot once the article hits newsstands sometime after November.

* Erin and Craig, online

Awwww... Erin and Craig are featured on theknot.com Real Weddings section online. Exciting! I am not a member, so I can't tell if the vertical images are cropped into squares? Hope not!

(Their September wedding is featured on my new website, too, the mountaintop slideshow).

assignment: USA Today, cover story

On Thursday, I had the pleasure of driving around Portland with John Webster, a volunteer with the Independent Transportation Network, for a cover story assignment for USA Today!

ITN is a driving service for seniors who no longer drive on their own, but need to run errands or visit a doctor's office. John transported more than a dozen passengers, and I learned a lot of back routes in town! The article is scheduled to run on April 12th, but here is a sneak peek overview image:

John and his wife own a candy store in Boothbay Harbor, Orne's. Keep him in mind for sweet favors, Boothbay brides!

Today will be a busy day, as I leave for Las Vegas tomorrow for WPPI!

USA Today publication

The USA Today article featuring Portland ran in today's paper. I attempted a scan of the newspaper that shows my photographs. To read the full article (which is so cute and made me so proud to live in such a culturally-rich destination), click here.

#12 Portland

Frommer's ranked Portland, Maine, as one of its top travel destinations for 2007 (other cities include Tokyo, Japan and Krakow, Poland). Really. USA Today assigned me to photograph two folks who will appear in an upcoming article profiling the city.

Dawn Clemens, General Manager at Fore Street Restaurant (ironically, I know Dawn! I worked with her at Pottery Barn last winter for that fab employee discount!).

Bob Witkowski, graphic design director for Portland Magazine.

Brides.com

Brides.com is featuring one of my weddings in their Real Wedding section, and can be seen online by clicking this link. It is always an honor to have my work published, but as usual, the cropping of the pictures doesn't exactly do the images justice.

You can see a slideshow of their wedding I created by clicking here.
