Roots recap
Roots is over. :(
I am totally sleep deprived (4 hours each night), bug-bitten (how do bugs reach those hard-to-reach places anyway?), and sad... I have a lingering emptiness in my gut missing my new friends.
Organizing a workshop is much more work than I ever thought possible. And although it wasn't perfect (which is hard for me to accept, as I most definitely struggle with being a perfectionist! Is there a support group for me?!), it was definitely outstanding. I'll be posting highlights of the students' work here this week, but first, a few snapshots of the end of the week...
By late-night Wednesday evening, Greg was editing from the couch with his feet up, and appletini on the brain- literally.
Thursday was spent completing the final edits, picking music & assembling slideshows for later that night, writing captions & headlines for the newspaper layouts, and the general shock & awe that things were wrapping up!
Capt. Smith pulled up to our dock that afternoon to treat everyone to a leisurely river cocktail cruise. It was exactly what we all needed!
Eric, per usual, was very excited about this.

Tyler grabbed my camera for this image. Students, notice the cool repetition and balance? :)
Sam and Meredith share a laugh.
When we arrived back at the house, Jake's Bake was waiting for us!
Our chefs treated us to an amazing clambake. Aren't they so cute?!
And Wild Bill Corney provided some Buffett-style tunes.
The first course was chowder and clams.
Sam wasn't so sure.
Down the hatch!
Eric, per usual, was very excited about this (wait, have I said this before?!).
Stephen crammed in a little last minute editing.
Dear friend Jenn digging in.
Andrea, right, is Arnold's wife and 6 months pregnant with their second child. Her belly was too cute not to photograph. She's talking with Linda, who has to be one of the kindest people ever.

The next course was lobster, sweet corn, sausage (or tempeh and/or swordfish & veggie kabobs for me), potatoes and cole slaw. This was a first for many of the students.
Yum!

After dinner, we set up for the slideshow presentations on the deck. Watching everyone's presentations under the stars was a surreal experience, made extra special by some of the students' subjects who came by to watch the show. One such person is Anne LeClaire, noted author and family friend. We took a quick picture with her husband to show my family (so here you go, Grandma! This is for you!).
I didn't take any photos during the slideshows, mostly because I was either a) talking, b) engrossed in watching or c) crying. Eric jumped up on the porch roof to capture this overall.
Thank you all SO much for working so hard and sharing of yourselves with us and this experience for the week. I am so proud of everyone and can't wait for next year (more on that soon...).

the fun continues
I can't believe it's already Wednesday! This workshop is flying by!! Students are wrapping up their assignments today, and we'll spend tomorrow assembling slideshows and page designs of their work for the Thursday night clambake and student presentations.
I'll catch you up on some more images taken around the workshop house (I'll post pictures of the students on their assignments tomorrow!).
I woke up to this on the fridge- just like home! Sorta.
This is Greg's editing room inside the main farmhouse.
I scored these great presentation screens from Office Max by Epson that have such a simple set-up. They just expand like an accordian.
The man himself. Love that smile, Greg!
Exhaustion begins to set in... (this is James).
It's important to try and eat healthy during such an intense week of work and very little sleep...
But when Linda came back from her assignment at the ice cream shoppe with more than 10 flavors for us to try, nutrition was quickly forgotten.
This is Arn's "Arnie Shack" team editing set-up.
Linda's edit.
Vince takes a try at the editing chair with Stephen.
Meredith listens in.
I love this image of Vince.
The light at sunset is absolutely amazing here (wait until you see some of J's sunset images from his assignment!).
Greg, Eric and I went outside to take advantage of it. Greg took this picture of Eric shooting me filming (Arn brought Newsday's video equipment and I'm having a lot of fun with it!).
And another angle.
Eric takes to the the tree.

And Dan and James jump in, too.
Some quick portraits Greg took of me.

The light disappears quickly and then we settle in for the night.

J spent the night at his assignment last night (to get a sunrise image today) so Greg took a look at his work this afternoon.
Things started off well...

And then J realizes he forgot to do something Greg asked him to photograph.
And J contemplates if he should go back to try again.
Overall, J did an amazing job and I'm so proud of him! I can't wait to post his final project soon!
We've been going to bed at 4a the last few nights. Brushing my teeth last night (this morning?), birds were singing and I could hear the putter of the fishing boats on the river heading out for a day of work. Crazy!

hello from the Cape!
Wow (!!) is truly the only word that comes to mind that best describes the past few days of the Roots Workshop.
This is where we are staying for the duration, Churchill Farm in South Yarmouth.

The farmhouse houses most the bedrooms and Greg's team editing room.

The guest cottage and bunk house, where Arn and his team are staying, quickly dubbed the Arnie Shack.
Our gorgeous little private paradise.
J and I arrived on Cape early Sunday morning to hit the grocery store (three carts later, we finally had the fridges-there are 5!- stocked with breakfast eats, munchies, coffee essentials, and of course, beer). Mentors Tyler and Jenn arrived first, and helped situate the students as they rolled in, helping each choose a bedroom and settle in for the evening. Each student received a pail with Cape Cod treats and workshop information on their arrival (a sweet play on the overnight guest bags often seen at the weddings we photograph).
We spent the early evening getting to know one another on the back deck as J played grill master and treated us all to some yummy burgers and dogs and other summer favorites like cole slaw, watermelon and make-your-own sundaes.

Later, we moved into the main house for some brief presentations on how to better prepare for the week (by me), a general Q & A (by Tyler) and the history of photojournalism (by Greg). Late night, the teams separated to have a more focused chat on individual strengths and weaknesses, and goals for the week. And then the staff reassembled to divvy up the assignments to the student whose self-described needs best matched each assignment.
After going to bed after 2a, things got rolling very early Monday morning with several students leaving for their assignments before the sun was up (lobster men start their day at 5a, as does the homemade ice cream production at a landmark Cape Cod ice cream shoppe). Students departed the rest of the morning in staggered patterns, first filling up on bacon & eggs & shared anxieties with those who gathered to fuel up for breakfast.

Mentors spent the entire day driving the length of the Cape to pay visits to students at their assignments... summer camp, a wildlife animal rehabilitation facility, classic baseball game, historic P-town lighthouse, and even a nudist campground (where the student was only allowed if he participated... something we knew in advance and had to carefully handpick a student who might be up for this sort of experience. The student, Eric, was immediately enthusiastic about the opportunity and has been doing an amazing job!).
Like in the morning, students rolled back to the house in stages and the out loud critiques began with each team. This is an excruciating process for those who have never had someone else look at their work, frame by frame, and dissect every choice you made as a photographer in capturing those images. There weren't any tears, but there were many "aha" moments as students- sometimes not even those whose work was displayed on the screen- increased their knowledge of composition, lighting, lens choice, exposure and when exactly to release the shutter to capture the best moment. It was intense! And again, a late night. One group didn't end until after 4a.
(A daytime editing session:)

The process will repeat itself again tonight and then tomorrow, before assembling a final edit for slideshow and newspaper mock design on Thursday. It's challenging to operate on so little sleep, but the energy of the group is contagious and I really think everyone is gaining more than they imagined from the experience already. I know I am!
J is here as a participant and is doing so well! He has an assignment to cover a lighthouse keeper's house that is available for families to rent during the summer. Tonight, he's going the extra mile and staying overnight with the family to get a sunrise image tomorrow. Tyler snapped this sweet image of me (on the phone checking in with one of the mentors) as J heads out this morning.
More soon! Now that everything is flowing smoothly I can concentrate more on taking lots of images of our retreat experience.

Texas- recap
It's been a few days since I've been home from Texas and I am busy catching up on those necessary things like emails, voicemails, and sleep! It's good to be home, but boy, I miss my friends from the workshop.
For those who aren't familiar, the Foundation Workshop is an intense photojournalism experience for wedding photographers (and inspiration for my Roots Workshop!). This year's group included 5 teams of 5 students, each with a team leader, two shooting mentors, a team assistant and a crew of volunteers and support staff. It was a huge group (as you can see from the previous post of our group photo).
It's difficult to put into words what the experience in Texas was like for me. Initially, I was nervous for my presentation on Monday morning so my concentration was making it through that (it was actually quite fun and many of the students told me they got a lot out of it). Then the focus shifted to our individual groups as the students received their assignments. I was a mentor for Brooks Whittington's team, a ridiculously talented wedding photojournalist from Dallas whose pure pj I respect and admire. Allegra and Tem Juarez rounded out the staff for our team. The participants varied in background and ability, but came together to produce an amazing body of work.
This is our fearless leader, Brooks.
And this is me, giving my presentation on Monday (Thanks, Ben).
A shooting exercise at a local carnival with Tina and Bill (Thanks, Joe).
Hard at work compiling our team slideshow for the presentation night (Thanks, Allegra).
Coming up for air!
Aga Agnieszka, from NY, was assigned to cover a dance school. Aga had a frustrating first day, but knocked it out of the park when she gained some confidence to try again on day 2.

Ande Aguilar from Texas was assigned to cover the daily life of a firehouse.

Anil Tohani, from London (!), was assigned to a stable.

Joe Wang, from Maryland, was also assigned to a dance school, this one ballet.

And Kerry Ryan, from Seattle, was assigned to the day in the life of a family.

I am oozing with pride over their accomplishments in such a short amount of time. To be thrown into the documentary world with no prior experience and leave with some killer stories is a testament to the commitment of the staff and students who make this a worthwhile experience. In between all the sweat and tears, friendships have been formed that will last a lifetime! Thanks to Huy and Bill for inviting me to be a part of it!

out of town: Texas
I'm heading to Texas on Sunday for a week to teach at the Foundation Workshop just outside Dallas. FW6 is a photojournalism workshop for wedding photographers- much like my Roots Workshop. You may recall I did this last year, too. I can't believe a whole year has already flown by! Wow!
I will be one of three speakers on Monday morning as the workshop kicks off, and the rest of the week I'll be mentoring students while they are out on assignments and at night during the critique session. There's a whole slew of talented folks attending... the workshop has nearly tripled in size! Watch the blog for pictures.
I'll do my best to return phone calls and emails quickly. This workshop packs a lot of work, fun and very little sleep.

Photographers: if it's not already on your radar, be sure to head over to the [b] School Blog for Becker's daily instructional videos. They're quick, informative, and quite fun.
And a big thanks to [b] for posting about Roots Workshop today (as well as other recent Roots Workshop blog posters like Justin and Mary Marantz, LaCour, Tina Carter from Vrai Photography and Katie and Chris Torres from 6 of Four Creations).

Southern Short Course faculty
I have been asked to travel to Charlotte, North Carolina, to speak to a group of news photographers about my second business, News Wedding Photographers, at the Southern Short Course sponsored by the National Press Photographers Association (NPPA) at the end of March.
I have been a member of NPPA for 11 years and have gone to many of these conferences as an attendee. I am thrilled to participate now as a speaker among industry greats such as Pulitzer Prize winning photojournalist Rick Loomis, Michael Williamson from the Washington Post, Cathaleen Curtiss from AOL and David Hobby of Strobist.com.
I will conduct an hour and a half session with Grover Sanschagrin from PhotoShelter.com and SportsShooter.com about making extra money (Grover will direct his chat toward selling photos online and I will speak about being a wedding photographer- something many news photographers do on the weekends). I will also take part in eight hours of portfolio reviews on two separate evenings, as well as man a table for News Wedding Photographers in the vendor show. It's going to be a busy few days!
You can check out the full faculty line-up by clicking here and the schedule of events by clicking here.

One Light Workshop
J and I took Zack Arias' super popular One Light Workshop today. Hosted at Melissa Jill's house in a suburb of Phoenix, 12 students had a 12 hour crash course on everything you need to know about using one light in various situations. Half of the day was spent on technical nuts & bolts instruction (I was having college photo class flashbacks!) and the other half was outside implementing those tips. It was a great refresher, and also helpful, fun, and inspiring to spend the day with a handful of wedding and portrait photographers- some of whom I am lucky to already know from other photography workshops and forums.
Zack talking us through how he approaches light at a scene.
Zack is very good at big, expressive gestures.
Have I mentioned yet today how much I love my new 24mm 1.4? Look how sharp Zack is!
Melissa Jill capturing the pocket wizard set-up. All together now: Oooooooh. ;)
This is an example of one of the scenarios he set up. In the background behind the model are palm trees, a parking garage and a busy road. Zack gets down low to shoot up toward the model to eliminate a cluttered background.
First, we took a quick ambient exposure, and then introduced a softbox. Lovely. We repeated this against a wall, among some shrubs, and at night on a park bench changing different variables (light placement, the strength of the light source, the angle of the model, etc).
Chimping
Who's that handsome guy multi-tasking? Making work calls and shooting at the workshop.
A few participants raved about their ShootSac's (Sergio had a sweet Boda Bag I liked, and Zack suggested a ThinkTank shoulder bag). I'm not sure I'll ever be ready to trade in my pj Domke bag for one of these trendy types.
To illustrate one of my favorites points to remember while on a photo assignment, I watched the other workshop participants. Rule 1: Get the shot...
Rule #2: Then make a better shot! Get down low...
Get in close...
And try a different angle...
Earlier at the house, Melissa's miniature schnauzer puppy Dixie settled right in with the workshop participants on the couch.
Foundation Forum friends Sergio (from Tucson) and Gulnara (from NYC).
The Foundation Forum attendees L to R: Sergio, Gulnara, me and Ray (we needed one light on us in this shot!).
Now I'm going to sleep! That was a long day!
Update: This is our group picture!

the gift of Roots!
Samantha DePoy-Warren, owner of I Do Click Photography in Farmington, Maine (as well as a dear friend to us and a consulting and portrait client too), received a pretty cool Christmas gift... tuition to Roots Workshop! It was such fun secretly coordinating this with her great hubby Kyle and mother to ensure the surprise. Sam says she had a hunch it was coming, but that she still bawled on Christmas morning.
From Sam: "It's just a really meaningful gift and an exciting opportunity and I am just so grateful to everyone for supporting me in this and you for helping Kyle coordinate!"
Hooray! SO excited to have you on board, Sam, as well as the others who have signed up, too.
There are still a few seats left, so don't delay in submitting your registration form. The total cost is $2500 and includes 5 days of instructional fee with several of the nation's top photographers and photo editors, 5 nights lodging and linen service, the welcome bbq, the final night's sunset cruise and clambake, as well as some other meals! Wow!
And, as a special New Year's bonus, if you refer a friend you'll receive $250 off your tuition!

introducing Roots Workshop!
I am so, so, so excited today! After planning since March, I can *finally* announce some big news!!!
Next summer I am hosting a photojournalism workshop for wedding photographers on Cape Cod! I've rented a great house on the water and gathered together a handful of dear friends and talented photographers and photo editors in the industry to teach.
You can learn more by checking out the website which launched today (and yes, that link in the left column is finally active)! If you know any wedding photographers who might benefit from this type of experience, please send 'em my way!
Many thanks to liveBooks for sponsoring the workshop with this great site!

Texas- wrap up
Ok. Ok. I promise I'll stop talking about Texas soon. But not yet. The official liveBooks (yes, the company J works for) website for the Foundation Workshop is up: www.fworkshop.com. Take a peek at all the students' great work!
Recognize that smile? A picture from Robert Mirani's picture story on the animal shelter.
A screengrab of the talented Anne Ruthman's portfolio:
And be sure to watch the great slideshow of the week by Sergio who was our official photographer for the week.

Texas- reflection
Wow. What a week! I am home, exhausted, and completely inspired. I walked away from the Foundation 5 Workshop with such a sense of excitement and hope for our industry, and a slew of new friends and colleagues. Many thanks to everyone who gave of their time, skill and friendship to create such a magical experience. I am most definitely already looking forward to next year!
Last night, we celebrated everyone's success with a lavish meal and slideshow presentations of all the amazing photography from the week. Below is a video clip of one of the students, Becca Spears, talking about her experience. Very cool.

Texas- assignment recap
It's hard to believe that the students are already done shooting their assignments! I really enjoyed checking in on their progress, and watching their growth in such a short amount of time was inspiring! I didn't photograph each student I visited, but here are a few I did:
Geoffrey Horowitz works a cool angle at the library.
Robert Mirani gets down low at the dog shelter.
Matt Chou gets in close to the card game at the senior center.
David Murray, Brooks Whittington and Greg Gibson consult with student Becca Spears at the skate park.
Don't forget, there are many more pictures from the week on the Foundation blog.
Visiting Robert at the animal shelter was tough. I have never been to one before, and now I know why. Within seconds of walking in, I had tears streaming down my face. The dogs' soulful eyes and obvious desire for attention and affection was overwhelmingly powerful. I was *this* close to walking home with this adorable black lab mix this afternoon! The Foundation Workshop could have had a mascot!

After many tears, some romps with a dog or two in the 'exercise pen,' I left and later ran into David at another student's assignment. With sunglasses still on to hide my red eyes, I explained that I "lost my s@*! at the animal shelter." He looked immediately concerned, asking questions about what I lost and should we be looking for it. We both got a huge chuckle when I reminded him of the expression and that I simply couldn't keep it together and had been crying. Maybe you had to be there, but nonetheless, it certainly lightened the mood!
I didn't really take any pictures at the actual assignments (it's not about what I could do!), but I did take snag this quick snapshot at the dog agility course that student Tina Carter covered. Cool light!
Thursday will be spent making final edits of the student's picture stories and assembling them for our wrap-up dinner party Thursday evening.

Texas- Wednesday?
Walking down the hall just now, I passed a man firing up his iPod for his morning jog. Me? I am just returning to my room for the night... morning? Whatever. Either way, I haven't gone to sleep yet.
Tuesday was a fantastic day being out in the field assisting the participants with their assignments, offering suggestions and tidbits from my experience (and yes, it made me miss journalism!). Tonight (last night?) was spent editing the student's work on projection screens. Those conversations were as much a learning process as the actual shooting. I loved being a part of it, somuchso that I decided to forego the strangely comfortable hotel bed for a night of back-and-forth banter among colleagues (again, another thing I really miss about journalism).
Wednesday, the students head back out to their assignments again and will try to incorporate what they learned from Tuesday's edit and make their images better. Cool!
For now, tho, I am going to close tight these bat-cave hotel blinds and try to catch some zzzzz....

Texas- Fat Tuesday

Here is our group picture from last night, as well as the link to the Workshop blog (I love that the picture of me from Sunday night is right after Becca told me the bit about me not being intimidating).
Heading out in the field now, to mentor four students today. Their assignments range from a truck stop to a feature on a dog agility trainer. Should be pretty cool! More soon....
